The 1999 Women’s World Cup received unprecedented media coverage, and the players on the USWNT were pioneers for women’s sports.  There were also pioneers in the background.  Coach Tony DiCicco pleaded with US Soccer in 1995 to hire, what he dubbed ‘mental skills coach,’ Colleen Hacker to the coaching staff full-time.  Players and Dicicco both speak to the vitalness of Hacker’s role in the success of the team.
